Gunmen suspected to be cultists yesterday afternoon invaded
Choba and IgboEtche communities in Obio/Akpor and Etche local government areas
of Rivers State shooting sporadically.
The attack on the two communities came barely 24 hours after
a traditional ruler and no fewer than six others were killed in Bere and Eweh
communities in Khana local government area of the state.
It was gathered that the gunmen, who invaded Choba, one of
the host communities to the University of Port Harcourt, were naked with only
red pants. It is not clear as at the time of filing this report if there were
casualties in the shooting at Choba, which lasted for several hours before the
intervention of men of the Choba Area Command of the Nigeria Police. Reports says
that the gunmen who invaded Igbo-Etche community in Etche local government area
of the state, attacked a Police checkpoint, injuring an undisclosed number of
policemen.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of Eleme local government area of
Rivers State, Philip Okparaji, has imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew on Agbonchia
community in the area following cult-related killings in the community.
Okparaji, in a statement made available to newsmen in Port
Harcourt, said the curfew, which is from 6:00pm to 6:00am, will last until
normalcy returns to the community.
The statement, which was signed by the Press Secretary to
the local government, Nwafor Oji Awala, directed the deployment of security
operatives to all the flashpoints in the community.
It reads in part: “Sequel to the breach in security within Agbonchia community of Eleme LGA, the Executive Chairman of Eleme local government, Barr Philip Okparaji has imposed a dusk to dawn curfew, that is, from 6pm to 6am within the area with immediate effect.
